Diabetic Control Solutions
Diabetic control solutions are used to test and check the operation of your meter. These quality control solutions test the blood control accuracy of the meter and the insulin test strip. Manufacturers often include diabetic control solutions with their meter. Most of the time you have to order the insulin test strips separately.
To use this testing method, you place an insulin test strip in the diabetic testing meter and a signal will appear to see if you're meter and insulin test strips are working properly.
When to use diabetic control solutions:
- to practice testing for blood glucose (advisable with new diabetic testing to learn technique)
- when the diabetic testing meter is new (to confirm meter is functioning properly)
- if you feel that the diabetic testing meter or insulin test strips are not working properly - the meter has been dropped, insulin test strips were left out in heat, vial of strips was left open, etc.
Every brand of diabetic testing meter has specific instructions on how to perform a test with their diabetic control solutions. Please read these instructions to ensure accuracy of the test. Some basic notes are:
- The brand of Diabetic Control Solution needed is specific for the insulin test strip used, not necessarily the meter being used.
- The Diabetic Control Solution range is usually found on the vial/package of insulin test strips.
- If there is an error, follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to isolate the problem with the diabetic testing meter or the strips.
Diabetic control solutions are necessary to ensure your meter is functioning properly and confirm the blood control accuracy of both the meter and the insulin test strip.
